The launch was detected at around 6:00 a.m. from the Wonsan area on North Korea’s east coast. The South Korean military has increased surveillance and is sharing information about the launch with the United States and Japan.
Japan’s Ministry of Defense also reported the launch of a ballistic missile. According to its data, the weapon did not reach Japan’s exclusive economic zone, indicating that it fell farther from the Japanese coast.
North Korea responded to military exercises
The launch took place two days after the United States and South Korea announced that they would hold annual large-scale military exercises. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises will begin on August 17 and last 11 days.
According to the South Korean military, about 18,000 South Korean service members will take part in them. Pyongyang traditionally regards joint exercises by Washington and Seoul as preparations for a possible invasion, while the United States and South Korea call them defensive.
North Korea conducted its previous launch on August 6. At that time, South Korea, the United States, and Japan detected the launch of a short-range ballistic missile. It was North Korea’s first test of ballistic weapons since late June.
