Ministry of Defense: 355 civilians, including 18 children, have died due to Russian explosives in three years of war

According to the Ministry of Defense, 355 Ukrainian civilians, including 18 children, have died in three years of war due to Russian explosive objects, UNN reports on Tuesday.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, 811 incidents involving civilians have been recorded due to explosive remnants of war. 1,158 civilians were injured, 335 of whom died. Among the dead are 18 children

"- said the head of the mine action department - Deputy Head of the Main Department for Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety of the Ministry of Defense, Colonel Oleh Shuvarskyi.

Shuvarskyi noted that the Russians often install mines unsystematically, including in residential areas, agricultural fields and on roads. 75% of incidents are with mines.

According to him, since the beginning of the full-scale aggression, the demining units of the Security and Defense Forces have destroyed almost 920,000 explosive objects. But the threat from explosive objects affects the lives of more than 6 million Ukrainians, especially in the de-occupied territories.

The most contaminated, as indicated, remain the Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, where more than 50% of all incidents occurred in total.

"A particular danger both in clearing the de-occupied territories of UXO and in carrying out humanitarian demining measures is posed by elements of cluster munitions, due to incidents related to their detonation," the colonel said.

Shuvarskyi pointed out that a large number of modern mines are made in a plastic case and have a low content of metal elements, which significantly complicates their search. In addition, a certain number of enemy mines are installed on non-removal and as booby traps during continuous mining of territories, which also requires considerable time and practical skills to neutralize them, the Ministry of Defense said.
