Kyiv became the leader in birth rate, but indicators are declining

In Ukraine, during the first half of 2026, over 73 thousand children were born. Kyiv became the leader in the number of newborns, reports UNN

The largest number of newborns was registered in the city of Kyiv — 8,352 children, the Ministry of Justice reported. With this indicator, the capital stands out noticeably against the background of other regions of the country. For example, in the Lviv region, 6,617 babies were born during the same period, and in the Dnipro region — 5,611.

As reported by the director of the Kyiv Perinatal Center, Dmytro Hovsieiev, 3,542 children were born in this facility over the same period.

"Behind these numbers are thousands of stories. And many of them began to the sound of air raid sirens. Expectant mothers went down to shelters, where they waited for the birth of their children. During massive missile attacks on the capital, our midwives, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and all medical staff stayed close to ensure that the most important moment in every family's life was safe," wrote Dmytro Hovsieiev on his Threads page.

Yet, the birth rate in the capital is falling. For comparison, in the first half of 2025, 9,947 children were born in Kyiv, meaning the decline is approximately 16% year-on-year — which aligns with the nationwide trend of a 16% decrease in birth rate compared to the first half of 2025.
