According to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, the circumstances are still under investigation, but preliminary reports indicate that the railway crossing was closed at the time of the accident. Le Soir, citing a reliable source, also reports that several people died as a result of this accident. The exact number of victims is not yet known.
Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin wrote in a post on X that he "learned with deep sadness of the tragic accident that occurred in Buggenhout." He did not provide further details.
