The head of the Russian Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, habitually blamed the "pro-Western liberal opposition," adding that "scum use other scum for money from abroad." The detainees themselves say that they were allegedly pushed into the attacks by phone scammers, which is reminiscent of the wave of arson attacks on military enlistment offices that scammers regularly push Russians to commit.
At least 31 criminal cases are already known, almost all of them initiated under Article 141 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (obstruction of the exercise of electoral rights).
The maximum penalty is 5 years in prison. Criminal cases are initiated even if the perpetrators fail to successfully complete the task. For example, a 47-year-old resident of the Krasnoyarsk Territory spilled brilliant green only on her ballot and on the lid of the ballot box, but she was still accused of trying to obstruct the work of the election commission.
At least four people have already been sent to pre-trial detention centers.
