G7 leaders will not adopt a joint communique on Ukraine at the summit in France - Politico

Leaders of the Group of Seven countries at the summit in France will abandon the traditional joint final communique. Instead, the meeting participants plan to approve separate declarations on a number of areas, while the issues of the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and the global economy will be outlined in a statement by the French presidency, UNN reports with reference to Politico.

The G7 summit will take place on June 15-17 in Evian, France. According to the publication, the participating countries intend to focus on adopting separate political declarations regarding critical minerals, the fight against oncological diseases, child safety on the Internet, international solidarity, and investment policy.

At the same time, the most sensitive geopolitical topics will not be part of a single joint document. This refers to the Russian-Ukrainian war, the situation in the Middle East, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the problems of global economic imbalances.

As noted by Politico, the position on these issues will be set out separately on behalf of the French presidency. A similar format was already used during the G7 summit in Canada last year.

The Elysée Palace stated that they consider the preparation for the summit successful, in particular due to the launch of a dialogue between the G7 countries and China regarding the problems of global economic imbalances.

On the eve of the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron held online negotiations with representatives of the G7 countries and a number of states that are not members of the association. Among the participants of the meeting were German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Zhang Guoqing.

Following the negotiations, the parties agreed to continue discussing the issue of global economic imbalances at the G20 platform with the support of the International Monetary Fund.
