A number of examinations have been conducted in the case of the flooding of the capital's subway tunnels, and one of them showed that the cause of the tunnel's destruction was improper operation, not poor construction, the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office reported on Facebook on Wednesday, UNN reports.

The prosecutor's office has the results of an examination that refute the statements of the Kyiv Metro about the allegedly poor-quality construction of tunnels between flooded stations

- the prosecutor's office said.

As indicated, within the framework of the pre-trial investigation, which establishes the causes of the flooding of the tunnels between the Demiivska and Lybidska metro stations, the prosecution conducted a number of necessary examinations.

The commission's construction and technical expertise concluded that the technical cause of the subway tunnel's destruction was its improper operation. The expert examination examined the quality of the tunnel construction, and found no violations or any deviations that led to the depressurization of the tunnel

- the prosecutor's office said.

However, according to the prosecutor's office, it was established that "measures to eliminate water ingress into the tunnel were carried out between March 2011 and December 2023 without the involvement of specialists from research institutes, metro construction, design and other organizations or individual specialists who would have established the causes of the damage and provided recommendations for their elimination.

"We inform you that the officials of the Kyiv Metro did not provide the results of any examinations or other documents on which their statements about poor design decisions during the construction of the tunnel between metro stations and alleged deviations from design decisions during the construction of the tunnel, which allegedly led to flooding, are based," the prosecutor's office said.

The agency drew attention to the fact that "the message of the Kyiv Metro says that ‘the results of the research are currently being finalized’, while in January 2024, KCSA stated that it had received the first preliminary conclusions from the Scientific Research Forensic Institution".

"However, even at the request of the investigation, officials of the Kyiv Metro and KCSA did not provide these conclusions to the pre-trial investigation body," the prosecutor's office said.

Recall

On July 23, the prosecutor's office reportedthat in the case of the flooding of the tunnels between Demiivska and Lybidska stations in the Kyiv metro, subway officials were notified of suspicion of official negligence.

The KCSA responded to the suspicions of metro officials over the tunnel flooding, in a statement claiming that "the tunnel structure of this section was poorly constructed during construction" and "the main allegations are allegedly improper maintenance and operation of the tunnel.
