Facebook and Instagram found ads from China for AI apps that "undress" people - media

Thousands of advertisements for artificial intelligence apps that can "undress" people, violating company policy, were placed on Facebook and Instagram by Meta. This is stated in a report by the non-profit organization Tech Transparency Project, Bloomberg reports, citing UNN.

Details

According to the publication, one of Meta's advertising partners in China, the Beijing-based company GatherOne Inc., has placed about 7,600 advertisements for mobile applications with artificial intelligence over the past few months. These apps can transfer women's faces onto nude bodies and create sexualized videos. Also mentioned separately is an application developed in China that allows the distribution of materials that some users have labeled as child pornography.

"Meta's rules prohibit advertising with sexual undertones or ads for apps that purportedly expose depicted individuals. But TTP's work aimed at holding big tech companies accountable demonstrates repeated failures by companies like Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc. to curb such apps," the publication writes.

Although Instagram and Facebook are not available in China, they are attractive advertising tools for Chinese companies seeking a global audience.

"It appears that Meta is providing free services to one of its leading Chinese advertising partners when it comes to nude advertising," said TTP Director Katie Paul.
