Austria has proposed that the European Union consider hosting Anthropic within the bloc to counter U.S. efforts to block foreigners from using the most advanced models of the artificial intelligence company that created Claude, UNN reports citing Reuters.

In a letter to EU Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, published by the Austrian government, Austria's State Secretary for Digitalization Alexander Pröll wrote that it is important that Europe is not cut off from core innovations.

"Let us jointly explore the strategic placement and participation of Anthropic in the European Union. With legal certainty, market access, capital, and a set of values that suit this company," Pröll said in the letter.

He did not say how this step could be taken and acknowledged that there would be skepticism about whether it is possible.

"The real question is not whether it is easy," Pröll wrote. "The question is whether we, Europeans, are ready to be the architects of our technological future, or whether we want to remain merely administrators of decisions made elsewhere."

Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Austrian proposal.

Earlier this month, the European Commission proposed laws to boost the cloud, artificial intelligence, and semiconductor industries in the EU, as well as to reduce dependence on American big tech companies, despite criticism from the U.S. government over the bloc's crackdown on the industry.
