The passenger ferry MV Barima capsized and sank off the coast of Guyana late Saturday evening during a voyage from the capital Georgetown to Port Kaituma. This is reported by Yle, writes UNN.

According to authorities, there were 116 passengers and 17 crew members on board. So far, 67 people have been rescued, while dozens of others are considered missing.

The vessel sent a distress signal at 23:01 local time on Saturday.

The search operation continues

Guyana's Prime Minister Mark Phillips stated that the search and rescue operation will continue until all possibilities for finding people are exhausted.

According to authorities, there were 250 life jackets, two rigid life rafts, and six inflatable life rafts on board the ferry.

Port Kaituma is located in the Essequibo region in the interior of Guyana. The ferry was making a regular voyage through the waters of the North Atlantic and the Pomeroon River to its destination.
