The passenger vessel KM Nurul Salsa sank on Wednesday approximately 43 nautical miles (79 km) from the port in the Selayar Islands in South Sulawesi province. There were 78 passengers and crew members on board. According to preliminary data, the cause of the accident was engine failure.
According to the head of the Makassar Search and Rescue Office, Muhammad Arif Anwar, five survivors, including a seven-year-old girl, were found late Saturday evening. They were holding onto a fishing trap belonging to a local fisherman.
The rescued — one man and four women — were evacuated by a fishing boat, after which they were taken to the port of the city of Benteng for medical examination and questioning.
At least one fatality is currently known. The search and rescue operation is ongoing, with rescuers continuing to search for another 20 people who remain missing.
