Libya remains one of the main transit points for migrants from Africa and the Middle East seeking to reach Europe. Smugglers often send people to sea in overcrowded and unsafe boats, which regularly leads to large-scale tragedies.
According to the International Organization for Migration, since the beginning of 2026, more than 800 migrants have died or gone missing on the central Mediterranean route. Last year, the number of victims on this route exceeded 1,300 people.
