A new flagship train "Sakura" has appeared in Ukraine on the Kyiv-Uzhhorod route

The Kyiv-Uzhhorod route has received a new train with carriages manufactured in 2026. The rolling stock is equipped with security systems and offers a menu of Japanese cuisine.

JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" has launched a new flagship train, "Sakura," which connects Kyiv and Uzhhorod and includes new carriages manufactured in Ukraine in 2026. This was reported by the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development, according to UNN.

It is noted that the new carriages are equipped with security systems featuring surveillance cameras, storage batteries, additional solutions for traveling with children, inclusive elements, as well as functional comfort details in the compartments.
The new flagship train departs on its first Kyiv-Uzhhorod journey today, April 28.

It is noted that with the assistance of JICA, Ukraine received about 28,000 tons of rails produced by Nippon Steel and dozens of units of specialized equipment, which allowed for the renewal of about 200 km of tracks on key routes.
The Ministry of Development added that 12 carriages of the train feature cherry blossom (sakura) petal branding.

In addition, passengers of this train will have access to an online portal about Japanese culture, architecture, and art, and will also be able to explore elements of a Japanese menu, board games, and joint Ukrainian-Japanese cultural projects.
As reported, "Ukrzaliznytsia" received the first six new passenger carriages out of 100 ordered in 2025 from PJSC "Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works" (KRCBW).
The total value of the contract is approximately UAH 6.5 billion, with funding provided by the state budget.
It is expected that deliveries will continue in stages until May 2028, and by the end of 2026, 60 such carriages will be ready.
