WP: Israel considering military occupation of Gaza for several months
Kyiv • UNN
Israeli forces are planning a new ground campaign in Gaza with a possible occupation. The decision depends on ceasefire negotiations and may include increased control and evacuation of civilians.
Israel is considering a large-scale ground operation in the Gaza Strip, which may include a military occupation for several months. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing sources, writes UNN.
Details
According to the publication, after a two-month ceasefire with Hamas, Israeli forces are preparing for a new phase of military operations in the Gaza Strip. Israeli political and military leaders are actively discussing plans for a new ground campaign that may include a military occupation of Gaza for several months or even longer.
This step may be part of a more aggressive tactic that includes increased control over humanitarian aid, targeting the civilian leadership of Hamas, and evacuating civilians to special "humanitarian bubbles,"
Currently, Israeli officials say they are awaiting the results of ceasefire negotiations, but no final decision has been made regarding further escalation of military action.
The invasion and occupation of Gaza require significant resources, as it will require up to five army divisions.
However, some senior officials, according to the Washington Post, believe that only a full-scale military operation can ensure the achievement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main goal - the destruction of Hamas, which was the result of the attack by this group on October 7, 2023, when about 1,200 Israelis were killed.
Experts point out that the IDF's past campaign was limited due to disputes between political and military leaders, as well as concerns from the international community about civilian casualties.
However, a change in political leadership in the United States and the strengthening of Israel's defense capabilities may affect the strategy, which is likely to lead to more decisive action.
Israeli officials also do not rule out continuing negotiations with Hamas through intermediaries before the start of a large-scale offensive.
Recall
On March 21, Israeli Defense Minister stated that the army will continue to seize Gaza. This will continue until Hamas releases all the hostages.
