On July 20, the world celebrates International Chess Day and International Moon Day. In Ukraine, according to the new church calendar, believers celebrate one of the biggest summer holidays — the day of remembrance of the glorious prophet Elijah, reports UNN.
International Chess Day
A professional and amateur holiday of the intellectual game. It has been celebrated since 1966 on the initiative of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), which was founded on this very day in 1924.
International Moon Day
An official holiday under the auspices of the UN. The date was chosen in honor of a historic event: on July 20, 1969, American astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, became the first people to land on the surface of the Moon.

Day of Remembrance of the Glorious Prophet Elijah
According to the new (New Julian) calendar, July 20 is one of the most important church and folk holidays. In ancient times, the prophet Elijah was considered the patron of thunder, lightning, and rain. The most famous summer omen is associated with this day: it was believed that from Elijah's day, the water in rivers and lakes becomes cold, so the swimming season officially ended.
For those who adhere to the old (Julian) calendar: on July 20, the memory of the venerable Thomas Maleinos and Acacius is honored. In folk tradition, this day was called "Avdotya the Hay-Rotter," as during this period prolonged rains often began, which prevented peasants from harvesting hay and could cause it to rot.
