Donald Trump has announced his intention to rename the highest mountain in North America, Denali, back to McKinley. The mountain was renamed by Obama in 2015 in honor of local residents.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said he would rename Denali, which former White House chief Barack Obama renamed after locals in 2015.

US President-elect Donald Trump says he will rename North America's tallest mountain Denali in honor of William McKinley, the 25th US president who was assassinated in 1901.

Reference

The mountain, which is over 6100 meters high, was named Mount McKinley in 1896 after a gold prospector exploring the region heard that McKinley, a supporter of the gold standard, had won the Republican Party's nomination for president.

Interestingly, in 2015 , the US Department of the Interior, in an order signed by Obama to change the name to Denali (in honor of local residents), noted that McKinley had never visited the mountain and had “no significant historical connection to the mountain or Alaska.

This is what Trump says:

They took his name off Mount McKinley.
He was a great president.
Let's put his name back on Mount McKinley because I think he deserves it

- Trump said on Sunday, speaking to his supporters in Phoenix.
