On March 31, three US Army soldiers assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division were found dead in Lithuania.
The US Armed Forces said the M88 was lifted from the peat bog after six days of effort that "required enormous resources from Lithuania," and hundreds of US Army, US Navy, Lithuanian Armed Forces and Polish Armed Forces soldiers; elements of the Lithuanian government and civil engineering.
The names of the servicemen are not disclosed until the next of kin are notified. It will be recalled that American soldiers participating in exercises in Lithuania disappeared early in the morning of March 25 on their M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicle while performing a task to repair and tow a disabled tactical vehicle.
As indicated, the search for the fourth soldier continues.
