The SBU counterintelligence thwarted another attempt by Russians to carry out a terrorist attack in Kyiv. Two agents of the Russian special services were detained, who were preparing an assassination attempt on a Ukrainian serviceman, reports UNN citing the Security Service of Ukraine.

Details

As the investigation established, the female suspects planned to blow up a serviceman in his car, which was located near the pedestrian zone of Maidan Nezalezhnosti. One of them was supposed to place explosives under the car and detonate it remotely.

SBU employees, even before the explosives were planted, discovered a GPS tracker installed on the serviceman's car. Subsequently, both female suspects were detained: one - "red-handed" when she came to pick up a homemade bomb from a cache, the other - at her place of residence, where nearly 6 kg of explosive substances were found.

Investigators established that the women acted separately. They were recruited through acquaintances who cooperate with Russian special services officers.

One of those detained turned out to be an unemployed resident of Sumy region, who, for the promise of "easy money," arrived in Kyiv, checked into a hotel, and manufactured a homemade explosive device following video instructions from a Russian handler

- reported in the SBU.

Another of those detained turned out to be a former owner of a confectionery shop in Sevastopol recruited by the Russians. When her business failed, Russian special services officers offered to pull her out of debt in exchange for cooperation.

The detainees were notified of suspicion under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • Part 2 of Art. 111 (high treason committed under conditions of martial law);
    • Part 5 of Art. 27, Part 1 of Art. 258 (aiding in the commission of a terrorist act);
      • Part 1 of Art. 14, Part 1 of Art. 28, Part 1 of Art. 258 (preparation for commission of a terrorist act by prior conspiracy of a group of persons);
        • Part 1 of Art. 263 (illegal acquisition of an explosive device);
          • Part 1 of Art. 263-1 (illegal manufacture of an explosive device).

            Currently, the detainees are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
