Meloni is not going to ban social media for children in Italy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that her government does not plan to independently initiate a ban on social media use for teenagers, similar to those being prepared in France, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Politico reports this, writes UNN.

"I am not against banning social media for children under 16, but I am not convinced that this proposal alone can solve the problem, as such a ban can be easily circumvented,"

- Meloni told journalists after the conclusion of the G7 summit.

According to her, such a ban risks "partially shifting the problem onto families" and may prove ineffective if governments do not exert greater pressure on platforms to act and "take responsibility."

At the same time, Meloni emphasized that she is not opposed to banning social media for individuals under 16 in Italy. However, the government decided not to introduce a corresponding decree or bill, leaving the discussion of this issue to parliament. Currently, several Italian parties have already submitted bills regarding such a ban, but none have been adopted yet.

Addition

Earlier this week, the United Kingdom announced its intention to introduce a ban on social media use for individuals under 16. France also plans to introduce a similar restriction for children under 15 later this year. The United States previously expressed concern about the British initiative, warning against universal approaches to this problem.

On Wednesday, leaders of the G7 countries, including US President Donald Trump, approved a declaration on protecting children online, which does not contain references to banning children's access to social media.
