Salome Zurabishvili is invited to Kyiv on September 11 for the Crimean Platform summit. Ukraine seeks to improve relations with Georgia and restore diplomatic ties at the ambassadorial level.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has been invited to Kyiv on September 11 to attend the Crimean Platform summit. Charge d'Affaires of Ukraine in Georgia Mykhailo Kharyshyn said this in an interview with IPN, UNN reports.
Another invitation is for the parliament, and in October, events organized by Ukraine and Latvia will be held in Riga.
Overall, according to Kharyshyn, "relations between the two countries could be better.
"... Both Ukrainians and Georgians have always been ready to support and help each other, but if we objectively assess the current relations between Ukraine and Georgia, these relations could be much better and more friendly.
According to him, Ukraine and Georgia still have "a high level of dialogue and mutual support in the international arena," despite "some negative or unclear statements" from Georgian authorities.
Kharyshyn noted that Georgia has become a transit country for more than 400,000 Ukrainian refugees forced to leave the temporarily occupied territories.
According to the embassy, there are about 25,000 Ukrainian citizens in Georgia today.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Georgian government for the preferences it provides to Ukrainian citizens, for establishing a special visa regime, for providing them with financial and material assistance, perhaps not so much, but for opening four Ukrainian sectors in public schools, so Ukrainian children in Georgia have a real opportunity to study in the Ukrainian language," the diplomat said.
He noted that several "very important working meetings" have recently been held with representatives of the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
"We expect that normal, full-fledged dialogue at the level of deputy ministers will soon be restored, and all this will be a prerequisite for further improvement and restoration of bilateral diplomatic relations to the level they were at recently.
I want you to know that Ukraine is not against the establishment of our diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level... The ball, as they say, is now in Georgia's court," Kharyshyn said.
