The Bundeswehr is short of two thousand service members to deploy a German brigade in Lithuania

The German army has a shortage of around 2,000 service members for the permanent deployment of a brigade in Lithuania by 2027. Only 60% of positions have been filled, and the Defence Ministry is considering compulsory recruitment.
The German army’s key project since the end of the Cold War has faced a personnel shortage. The permanent deployment of a Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania requires 4,800 servicemen by the end of 2027, but only about 60% of positions are currently filled — approximately 2,000 people are still needed. Germany’s Ministry of Defence told the publication that the units already deployed in Lithuania are 92% staffed. However, the main part of the brigade, including the tank battalion and mechanized infantry battalion, will arrive from Germany only in 2027. This is where the main personnel shortage remains.
Defence Minister Boris Pistorius had previously allowed for the possibility of compulsory recruitment of servicemen to carry out this task. Despite information campaigns, trips to Lithuania and other measures to attract volunteers, there are still not enough people willing to serve on NATO’s eastern flank.
A decision on compulsory recruitment must be made by the end of the year, as servicemen will need time to prepare for the relocation together with their families.
