The 77-year-old horror king shared a statement that he was leaving via his account on Thursday following rumors that the owner of X - formerly known as Twitter - Elon Musk, 53, had banned him from the platform.

"I'm leaving Twitter. I tried to stay, but the atmosphere has become too toxic. Follow me on Threads if you like," King wrote.

The day before, the writer, who joined a number of Hollywood stars leaving the platform, dispelled rumors that Musk had kicked him off X after he joked about the billionaire's friendship with President-elect Donald Trump.

"I see there are rumors that I named Musk-man as Trump's new first lady. I didn't, but only because I wasn't thinking about it," he wrote on Wednesday.

"There are also rumors that Muskie kicked me off Twitter. But I'm here," King added.

King, as the publication notes, was referring to recent memes about Musk that were created by artificial intelligence and depicted the tech entrepreneur as Trump's first lady. According to the Daily Dot, the meme appeared after Musk appeared in a Trump family photo.

Then they gained momentum when a false rumor was spread that King had been "suspended" from X for calling Musk "Trump's first lady.

The author has repeatedly spoken out against the Tesla and SpaceX founder. In the days before and after the Republican candidate's victory, he repeatedly ridiculed Musk for supporting Trump, the publication points out.
