In March, Spain purchased a historical maximum of gas from the Russian Federation, amounting to 9,807 GWh. The increase in supplies is due to disruptions in logistics in the Strait of Hormuz.

In March, Spain imported a record volume of gas from Russia – almost 10,000 GWh per month. This was reported by El País with reference to data from the gas transmission system operator Enagás, writes UNN.
Details
According to Enagás, in March, the volume of Russian gas imports reached 9,807 GWh, which was the highest figure in history.
This is more than double the volumes of previous months and even more than during the energy crisis of 2023.
Impact of the war on the market
The sharp increase in supplies occurred against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East, which disrupted global energy chains.

In particular, restrictions on transportation through the Strait of Hormuz forced European countries to look for alternative sources of supply.
Share of Russian gas
Russia has become one of the key gas suppliers to Spain, despite political tensions and the war against Ukraine.
As of March, it was among the main sources of imports along with the United States and Algeria.
The increase in purchases of Russian gas is causing discussions in Europe, as the EU officially seeks to reduce energy dependence on Russia.
However, the current instability in world markets forces individual countries to temporarily increase imports from traditional sources.
