Saab signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration for the supply of 16 Gripen E fighters for Ukraine. The order value is approximately $2.54 billion, with deliveries scheduled for 2029-2030.

Swedish defense technology manufacturer Saab on Tuesday signed a contract to supply 16 Gripen E fighter jets to Ukraine worth approximately $2.54 billion. This is stated in the company's statement , reports UNN.

"Saab has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the supply of 16 Gripen E fighter jets to Ukraine. The order value is approximately SEK 24.6 billion ($2.54 billion), and it will be reflected in the financial statements in the third quarter of 2026. Saab's deliveries to FMV are scheduled for 2029–2030," the company's statement reads.
It is reported that in addition to the 16 Gripen E fighter jets, the contract also includes the supply of spare parts, related goods, and equipment.
"I am very proud that Sweden and Saab can now ensure the delivery of Gripen E to Ukraine, providing a world-class fighter jet that will transform the combat capability of the Ukrainian Air Force. This will significantly strengthen Ukraine's air defense and help ensure the country's ability to protect its people and secure its future," said Saab's President and CEO Micael Johansson.
The company noted that the Gripen fighter is designed to counter modern threats in complex conditions. Its operational flexibility and resilience allow flights from short runways, temporary airstrips, or roads, enabling dispersed operations and high operational readiness. The software architecture facilitates continuous upgrades and adaptation to changing operational requirements. With low maintenance requirements and rapid turnaround, the Gripen provides modern and cost-effective fighter capabilities, and is easy to operate and maintain.

Ukraine and Sweden signed an agreement to purchase 16 Gripen E fighter jets, with deliveries set to begin in early 2029. Additionally, in early 2027, Ukraine will receive the first 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets as military aid from Sweden.
