The cargo ship Sparta, which was supposed to take Russian weapons out of Syria, broke down on the high seas due to an engine failure. Russian troops in Syria are to leave the country by February 2025 at the request of local authorities.

The ship that was supposed to take Russian troops out of Syria broke down at sea. The Russian crew is currently adrift in the high seas off Portugal, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine reported on Monday, UNN reported

The cargo ship Sparta, which Russia sent to remove its weapons and equipment from Syria, broke down while underway - the main engine's fuel pipe failed. The Russian crew is trying to fix the problem and is drifting in the high seas near Portugal

- said the DIU.

Meanwhile, according to the GUR, the remnants of the Russian contingent in Syria have completed their withdrawal from remote areas and are located in only two places - at the air base in Hmeymim and the naval base in Tartus.

Russia has begun to move some of its weapons and equipment from the port of Tartus to Libya by sea.

Also, the Russian military in Syria is actively discussing the alleged demand of the new government of the Arab republic to Moscow to completely withdraw its military contingent from Syrian territory, in particular from the bases in Hmemim and Tartus, no later than February 20, 2025.

The move is allegedly related to the new government in Damascus' desire to achieve the lifting of international sanctions, the DIU said.

On December 19, it was reported that satellite images showed increased activity at the Russian bases Khmeimim and Tartus in Syria. A massive movement of military equipment and transport aircraft was recorded, which may indicate a reduction in the Russian contingent.
