German defense giant Rheinmetall plans to start production of 155mm artillery ammunition in Lithuania in mid-2026. About it UNN reports with reference to Lrt.
The new Rheinmetall plant will be located in Baisogal, a city in the Radwiliski District of Lithuania.
The plant will start operating in mid-2026 and after completion of construction can produce tens of thousands of 155-mm artillery shells per year
Representatives of the Lithuanian government and Rheinmetall signed on Friday in Vilnius an agreement on the lease of a land plot for a future plant in the Radviliskis district and an agreement on the purchase of 155-mm ammunition.
According to acting Economy Minister Ausrine Armonaite, Lithuania and Rheinmetall will participate in the project together.
"Since we still have to complete some processes that are confidential, we will announce this a little later, but very soon we will present exactly what the joint venture will look like. But mostly it will be a joint project of Lithuania and Rheinmetall," Armonaite said after signing the agreements.
According to acting defense minister Laurinas Kaschiunas, Lithuania will purchase 155 mm ammunition from the Lithuanian factory, as they are suitable for German self-propelled howitzers PzH 2000 and French Caesar, which are used by the Lithuanian armed forces.
"The issue of integrating ammunition into these systems will be resolved," he said.
According to Kashchiunas, the amount of ammunition purchased is "calculated taking into account the interests of Lithuania", and the price "corresponds to the market price".
