In the Canadian province of Alberta, a separatist movement has announced the collection of over 300,000 signatures for a referendum on independence. This was reported by Bloomberg, according to UNN.

Organizers of the Stay Free Alberta initiative noted that they submitted 301,450 signatures to the electoral body Elections Alberta, which significantly exceeds the required threshold of approximately 178,000.
If a vote is held, residents will be asked to answer whether Alberta should leave Canada and become an independent state.
Obstacles to the referendum
The signatures must still undergo verification. Furthermore, representatives of Indigenous peoples have filed a lawsuit against this initiative.
Previously, a court prohibited the certification of the petition until the legal proceedings are completed, which could delay the process.
Context and support
The idea of secession emerged against the backdrop of long-standing disputes between the province and the federal government, particularly regarding the use of natural resources.
At the same time, polls indicate limited support for this initiative – about 27% of residents support independence, while the majority are opposed.
If approved, the referendum could take place on October 19, alongside other regional votes.
