Lithuania plans to strengthen the border with Russia and Belarus with fortifications and mines, following similar statements from Poland. This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of the country, citing a statement by the head of the Lithuanian defense department, Dovile Šakalienė, reports UNN.
Details
The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, Dovile Šakalienė, said that she discussed with the Ministers of Defense of Poland and Finland the unification of the Eastern Shield and the Baltic Defense Line, as well as the involvement of Finland in a joint plan to strengthen border protection.
The Ministry emphasized that Lithuania remains a reliable partner in the transatlantic, European and regional formats, promoting multilateral solutions in the field of defense.
During these meetings, a discussion was initiated on updating and expanding the concept of counter-mobility - following the example of Poland, the border of the northeastern flank can be strengthened with several layers of fortifications, including, but not limited to, anti-personnel and anti-tank mines
"Regional partners intend to seek EU funding to achieve this goal," the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense added.
Domestic institutions are also involved in the work - an agreement has been signed with the Ministry of the Interior on the development of shelter infrastructure, increasing the readiness of civil defense and healthcare systems, as well as joint tactical-level training of internal security and national defense - 25 million euros have been allocated for these purposes
It is noted that at the beginning of March, Lithuania discussed with the Ministers of Defense of Poland and Finland the unification of the "Eastern Shield" and the Baltic Defense Line and the participation of Finland in strengthening border defense.
Lithuania borders Belarus in the southeast, and the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation in the southwest.
