Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has tasked opposition MP Andris Kulbergs with forming a new government following the resignation of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa. A parliamentary vote could take place as early as this week. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Kulbergs, who leads the opposition United List alliance, stated that he plans to form a four-party coalition after the current coalition collapsed due to disputes over national security.

"We have already reached a distribution plan. The way we arrived at this decision – the division between four partners – was straightforward. We had to act on the simplest principles: four partners, equal conditions, and move forward,"

- Kulbergs said at a press conference.

Reuters notes that the government coalition collapsed following discussions regarding the authorities' response to incidents involving Russian drones, which have been repeatedly recorded in the Baltic states in recent months.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa resigned five months before the scheduled parliamentary elections.

National security issues are expected to remain one of the key priorities for the new government. The Baltic states remain among the harshest critics of Moscow due to the war against Ukraine and actively support Kyiv.
