An armed man in Zakarpattia abducted a woman with a child and wounded a police officer during his arrest. The perpetrator faces life imprisonment for the crimes.

In Zakarpattia, police detained an armed kidnapper of a woman with a 3-year-old child, who opened fire on law enforcement officers. As reported by the National Police, during the arrest, the suspect offered armed resistance and shot one of the police officers, and tried to run over another with a car, UNN reports.

As reported by the police, a report about the kidnapping of a woman and a minor child was received from emergency medical personnel.
According to preliminary information, the perpetrator was driving a Skoda car and was likely armed. The incident occurred in one of the settlements of Mukachevo district.
Police patrols were immediately oriented to search for the offender. Soon, police officers located and detained him in the neighboring Berehove district.
During the arrest, the perpetrator offered armed resistance: he shot one of the police officers in the head with a traumatic pistol, and tried to run over another with a car. Despite the threat to their lives, the police officers detained the perpetrator

As reported by the National Police, after conducting initial investigative actions, it was possible to reconstruct the chronology of events: the detainee arrived at the residence of his 45-year-old acquaintance from Mukachevo region. During an argument, he put a pistol to the woman's head and forced her and her 3-year-old child into the car. Subsequently, the perpetrator headed to the Berehove district. There, he tried to kidnap another child - his own grandson, and also inflicted bodily harm on his daughter. At that moment, taking advantage of the situation, the resident of Mukachevo region, with her 3-year-old child in her arms, fled from the kidnapper's car. During this conflict, the perpetrator again used a weapon. A police patrol prevented him from leaving the scene.
Currently, the perpetrator has been detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. All participants in the incident are safe and cooperating with the investigation. Minor children did not suffer bodily injuries. The injured police officers are receiving the necessary medical care - there is no threat to their lives, law enforcement officers added.
Police investigators have opened two criminal proceedings based on this fact - under Part 2 of Article 146 and Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This refers to illegal deprivation of liberty or kidnapping of a person and assault on the life of a law enforcement officer. For the committed act, the detainee faces 9 to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment.
