In the Podilskyi district, a 52-year-old man who was in AWOL status, while being checked for documents, took out a grenade and detonated it. Two police officers were injured, and the offender died in the hospital.

In Kyiv, a moped driver who was stopped for a traffic violation and found to be absent without leave (AWOL) began threatening with a grenade, after which an explosion occurred; two police officers were injured, the offender died from his injuries in a medical facility, a criminal investigation has been launched, the National Police reported, writes UNN.

The incident occurred today, July 5, in the Podilskyi district, when a patrol police response team stopped a moped driver for violating traffic rules.
"During a document check, law enforcement officers found that the 52-year-old man was in AWOL status. He took out a grenade and began threatening to use it, and then an explosion occurred. As a result of the explosion, two police officers and the offender himself were injured. They were all taken to a hospital, where the latter died from his injuries," the police stated.
Currently, the law enforcement officers are in the hospital receiving medical care.
A criminal investigation has been launched under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine into the illegal handling of a grenade and the injury of two police officers.
Police investigators entered information into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Article 345 (threat or violence against a law enforcement officer), Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives), and Article 115 with the note "accident" of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
