German media reacted to the news of the U.S. troop withdrawal from Germany, as U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington would reduce the number of service members by "much more" than the initial 5,000 announced by the Pentagon this week, UNN reports, citing CNN.

The Mayor of Ramstein stated that a sudden withdrawal of a significant number of American troops would be difficult to achieve. The city is home to the Ramstein Air Base, which is generally considered the largest outside the United States.
"(Ramstein Air Base) is a global gateway for the American military… I think it is impossible to close Ramstein from one day to the next," Mayor Ralf Hechler told German state broadcaster Deutsche Welle. "Maybe they will reduce it, maybe the NATO partnership with the United States and NATO will be canceled in a few years, nobody knows," Hechler added.
The German newspaper Die Welt, in an article published this weekend, noted that German-American relations are "noticeably deteriorating."
Jürgen Hardt, a foreign policy expert for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), stated that the U.S. presence in Germany helps them act quickly in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and that, given this, one can hope the troop withdrawal will not be an "irreversible course of action."
