Friedrich Merz, the CDU/CSU candidate, visited Kyiv a week after Scholz's visit. The leader of the opposition bloc, who does not rule out providing Ukraine with TAURUS, intends to discuss the state of the country's defense.

The CDU/CSU candidate for Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, has arrived in Kyiv. He came to the capital of Ukraine exactly a week after the visit of Olaf Scholz, reports UNN with reference to DW.

"The purpose of my trip is to find out the current state of defense in this country. I am very much looking forward to a new meeting with the president. And I just want to find out today what the situation is in Ukraine and what we can do to help the affected country continue to defend against Russian aggression," Merz said in Kyiv.

Earlier, Merz, unlike the current chancellor, did not rule out providing the Ukrainian Armed Forces with long-range TAURUS missiles.

The opposition bloc CDU/CSU, which is nominating Merz as its candidate for Chancellor of Germany, is leading in the polls ahead of the early elections to the Bundestag, which will be held in February next year.
