As the publication notes, this came as a surprise, as Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood were previously mentioned among the likely candidates for this position.
Last month, Healey resigned from the government in protest against what he described as insufficient funding by Sir Keir Starmer's government for the defense investment plan.
At the same time, Healey has experience working in the Ministry of Finance. Under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, he served for five years as Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
He also served as Minister for Local Government from 2007–2009 and as Minister for Housing from 2009–2010.
It is reported that Burnham appointed Healey as Chancellor because he believes they share the same views on economic stability, current fiscal rules, decentralization, and reindustrialization.
Furthermore, it is believed that Burnham sought to bring an experienced and proven person into the government, which the former Defense Minister became.
