Former Minister Omelyan served with notice of suspicion for evasion of military service

The SBI suspects Volodymyr Omelyan of evading duties through deception during his service. He faces up to ten years in prison under Article 409 of the Criminal Code.

Former Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan has been notified of suspicion of evading military service. The relevant document dated May 13 was published on the website of the Prosecutor General's Office and confirmed by the SBI, UNN reports.

As stated in the notice of suspicion on the website of the Prosecutor General's Office, an SBI investigator "notified Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Omelyan (...) that he is suspected of a serviceman evading the performance of military service duties through other deception, committed under martial law, i.e., committing a criminal offense under Part 4 of Article 409 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine."
The Bureau confirmed that "the SBI notified a serviceman – a former Minister of Infrastructure – of suspicion for evading military service."
"SBI employees notified a former Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine of suspicion, who, after mobilization, served as an officer in the planning group of the headquarters of one of the military units and for a long period did not perform his official duties. The official was supposed to ensure the collection and analysis of information regarding the combat situation, monitor the execution of command orders, and prepare proposals for planning combat operations. However, instead, he systematically misled the leadership, claiming that he was allegedly performing other tasks related to logistics and supporting the activities of the military unit," the SBI stated.
According to the SBI, "during several periods in 2022-2023, the man spent his service time at his own discretion and did not perform any duties related to military service in the unit stationed in the Cherkasy region."
"The serviceman has already been notified of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 409 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - evasion by a serviceman of military service duties through deception, committed under martial law," the SBI reported.
The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of up to 10 years.
