After an intervention that lasted about an hour, the fire that engulfed the spire of Rouen Cathedral was localized, firefighters told BFMTV.

"This means that the flames that engulfed the site at an altitude of 120 meters are no longer spreading," the newspaper points out.

Firefighters still need to secure the building and make sure there are no hot spots.

The prefect of the Seine-Maritime, Jean-Benoît Albertini, indicated that an "inventory of some works" and furniture is being carried out inside the Rouen Cathedral.

"We are located on a very valuable cultural heritage site," he said.

He added: "An inventory of works that may be affected by the secondary water runoff is being conducted. We may have to shelter the works.
