EU and G7 react to Russian strike on the Lavra – first statements
Kyiv • UNN
Ursula von der Leyen and Emmanuel Macron condemned the Russian attack on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The G7 summit will discuss increasing pressure on Russia for the sake of peace.

The European Union and France, which holds the G7 presidency, have reacted to the massive Russian attack on Ukraine, which affected the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced discussions on increasing pressure on the Russian Federation at the G7 summit, while French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the summit would work "on a ceasefire, which Russia continues to stubbornly refuse, and then on peace," UNN reports.
Last night, massive attacks occurred across Ukraine, resulting in more civilian deaths, and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO site, sustained serious damage. Today, G7 leaders will meet in Evian. We will discuss the next steps to increase pressure on Russia, bring Putin to the negotiating table, and end these senseless killings
The President of the European Commission emphasized: "Europe wants peace. No one more so than the Ukrainian people. Russia, however, has once again demonstrated its exclusive interest in violence and destruction."
French President Emmanuel Macron pointed out that "the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of the most important sites of Ukrainian Orthodoxy and a UNESCO World Heritage site, was hit last night by a powerful Russian missile and drone strike, which was again directed against Kyiv and caused civilian casualties. Just as with the war of aggression that Russia has been waging against Ukraine for over four years, nothing justifies this attack on our world heritage. France stands ready to cooperate with the Ukrainian authorities responsible for the heritage."
This attack only strengthens our determination to do everything possible, together with our allies and partners, to work toward a ceasefire, which Russia continues to stubbornly refuse, and then toward peace. We will work on this at the G7 summit in Evian
