The United Kingdom intends to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP to strengthen its position in NATO and improve relations with the new US President Donald Trump. An official announcement is expected to be made in the spring of 2025, a few months after Trump's inauguration in January.
According to sources in the British government, an increase in defense spending from the current 2.2% to 2.5% will allow London to strengthen its defense capabilities and move the country from eighth to fourth place among NATO member states in terms of military spending.
Among the politicians who publicly criticized Trump during the opposition period were Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds. Now that Trump is back in the White House, London is trying to find common ground with Washington, and increasing the defense budget is one of those steps.
