Armenia has taken another step towards the EU: Parliament approves start of accession process

The Armenian Parliament supported the bill on the start of the process of joining the European Union. The initiative was supported by the majority of deputies, despite the Prime Minister's reservations regarding the referendum.

The Armenian Parliament has approved a draft law on starting the process of joining the European Union, News.am reports, writes UNN.

At a meeting on March 26, the Armenian Parliament approved in the second and final reading the draft law "On the beginning of the process of the Republic of Armenia's accession to the European Union." The bill was supported by 64 deputies, 7 voted against.

The initiator of the project is the civil initiative "Platform of Democratic Forces", which managed to collect 60,000 signatures in 2 months (with the 50,000 signatures required by law). These signatures were necessary to submit the project for consideration in the National Assembly.
On January 9, 2024, the government of Armenia approved the draft law. Then, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, stressed that the adoption of the bill does not mean membership in the European Union. According to him, it is necessary to hold a referendum on this issue.
