A crater with a diameter of 10 meters was discovered in a field in Tarnawa-Kolonia (Lublin Voivodeship), and local residents heard a powerful explosion during the night. Tarnawa-Kolonia is located approximately 50 km south of Lublin.
Firefighters, police, and military were dispatched to the scene.
"At this stage, we are not providing any details," Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister-coordinator of special services, told Onet.
"At 3:40 AM, an unidentified object was detected in Polish airspace. An F-16 fighter was scrambled to intercept it, but after six minutes, the object disappeared from radar. An Mi-24 helicopter indicated the probable crash site of the object near Tarnawa-Kolonia (Lublin Voivodeship). Services and military are working at the scene," reads the latest statement from the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, published on Thursday after 7:00 AM local time.
The Lublin police also commented on the matter.
"This morning, we received a report from Warsaw Public Radio (WCPR) that a loud explosion was heard in the Biłgoraj area between Tarnawa-Kolonia and Biskupice. The duty officer dispatched police patrols to the scene. After 5:00 AM, police officers discovered a crater and scattered parts of an unidentified object in a field between Tarnawa-Kolonia and Tokary, approximately 2 km from buildings," reads the statement.
"Currently, the scene is being secured by police. The incident has been reported to services such as the Military Police, the Internal Security Agency (ABW), the Military Counterintelligence Service (SKW), and the District Prosecutor's Office in Lublin. Anti-terrorism police officers have been dispatched to the scene. Operations at the scene are ongoing," the statement said.
Captain Tomasz Stachyra, spokesman for the Commander of the State Fire Service of the Lublin Voivodeship, also told PAP that "firefighters are securing the crater that was found on Thursday morning in the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia." Six fire brigades are working at the scene.
In an interview with TVN24, Captain Stachyra said the crater is located in fields, approximately 1.5 km from the nearest buildings.
The ABW and SKW, which were notified of the situation by the police, have also taken action.
"It is entirely natural that Polish special services always take appropriate measures in such situations. However, due to their secret nature, we are not disclosing their data at this stage," Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister-coordinator of special services, told Onet.
In an interview with Lublin112, residents of the town of Targowisko said they heard an explosion and windows trembling in some houses. "We have never heard anything like this in our lives. The windows almost blew out," one resident said.
In Lublin, alarm sirens also sounded during the night, shortly before 4:00 AM local time. The mayor of the city reported this, and the alarm was also heard in Krasnystaw.
"Today, before 4:00 AM, we received a report of an air threat. This was related to numerous missile attacks on Ukraine, particularly those carried out near the Polish border. In Krasnystaw, alarm sirens were activated. The warning system worked effectively and in accordance with procedures. After the threat subsided, residents heard another signal announcing its cancellation," he wrote.
Earlier, after 2:00 AM local time, the Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) reported that "due to the activity of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation, which is carrying out strikes on the territory of Ukraine, military aviation operations have begun in Polish airspace."
The operations of the Polish Air Force were related to a massive attack on Ukraine, particularly on regions bordering Poland.
