The 17-year-old Kharkiv resident, who had only the 126th starting rating among almost 500 participants, defeated experienced Spanish grandmaster David Anton in the final round. Degtyarov scored 9 points out of 11 possible and took first place alone.
The European champion was congratulated by the president of the Chess Federation of Ukraine, Oleksandr Kamyshin, who called this achievement historic and wished him further success.
