Ukraine is ready to transit any gas except Russian: Shmyhal talks to Fico
Kyiv • UNN
Prime Minister Shmyhal spoke with his Slovak counterpart about energy security and gas supplies. Ukraine is ready to transit any gas other than Russian gas after the current agreement expires in 2025.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal had a conversation with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. They talked about uninterrupted supply of natural gas in the winter, as well as the fact that Ukraine is ready to transit any gas except Russian gas, UNN reports.
"...Ukraine's priority is to guarantee energy security for our entire Europe, and in particular, uninterrupted supply of natural gas in winter," Shmyhal emphasized.
According to him, a lot has been done in recent years at the level of the entire European Union and in cooperation with EU countries to ensure reliable gas supplies and to prevent the use of any kind of energy as a weapon, which has been a common practice for Russia in its relations with its neighbors and the European Union for decades.
"Ukraine is ready to fulfill the obligations we have undertaken under the Association Agreement with the EU. Therefore, if the European Commission officially addresses Ukraine on the transit of any gas other than Russian gas, we will certainly discuss it and are ready to implement the relevant agreements based on the principles of energy security of the entire EU and every European nation," the Prime Minister of Ukraine said.
Shmyhal also emphasized that Ukraine's agreement with Russia on gas transit expires on January 1, 2025, and will not be extended.
"Ukraine is grateful to all partners in Europe for understanding that Russia is using its energy exports to finance a criminal and unprovoked war against our country and to continue its destabilizing activities against other European countries and the EU as a whole. It is important that the adopted 15th EU sanctions package strengthens sanctions, in particular, against the shadow tanker fleet, which brings Russia significant funds to continue the war. The sanctions pressure against the Russian energy sector should be continued, as it is one of the key elements of forcing Russia to a real peace," the head of the Ukrainian government added.

In addition, the Prime Ministers of Ukraine and Slovakia discussed increasing our cooperation in the electricity sector.
"Last week, 30% of electricity imports came from Slovakia. We are grateful for this support and are ready to expand these opportunities, as it strengthens both our nations - the resilience of Ukraine and the economy of Slovakia... We continue to build relations with the Government of Slovakia in accordance with the interests of both our nations and a pragmatic approach to solving common issues," Shmyhal summarized.
