The Ukrainian government has approved a plan for the development of the irrigation complex until 2050. It envisages the reform of infrastructure management, investments in the modernization of irrigation systems and the accumulation of water resources.

Ukraine has approved a plan for effective irrigation of agricultural land in the context of climate change, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy reported, UNN writes.

This refers to the long-term Plan for the Development of the Irrigation Complex of Ukraine until 2050, approved by the government.

"The main goal of the plan is to create an effective irrigation sector, which will be managed with the participation of water user organizations. This should ensure highly efficient, sustainable and environmentally safe agriculture in the context of climate change," said Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Vitaliy Koval.

According to him, this will also contribute to "solving the strategic task of strengthening and developing Ukraine's position as one of the world's leading producers and exporters of food."

He noted that the restoration of irrigation systems and irrigation is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

What the plan envisages

The plan envisages the completion of the institutional reform of the irrigation infrastructure management system, stimulating investment in the restoration, modernization and development of existing and construction of new irrigation infrastructure and water resources accumulation.

Currently, 143 irrigation systems with a service area of 1053.9 thousand hectares and 297 drainage systems with a service area of 390.4 thousand hectares have been accepted into the management of the State Agency for Fisheries.
