Ukraine announces a new stage of capacity expansion for gas imports from Poland

Ukraine is moving to a new stage of increasing capacity for gas imports from Poland, the Ministry of Energy reported on Wednesday, according to UNN.

Details

"The Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine has received approval from the NEURC to implement a joint project to increase capacity at the cross-border interconnection with Poland. This decision opens a new stage in expanding natural gas imports from the European Union and will contribute to Ukraine's further integration into the European energy market," the Ministry of Energy noted.

As reported, a joint auction for incremental capacity will take place on July 6, 2026, on the GSA (Gas System Auctions Platform) auction platform.

The project, as indicated, involves the auction allocation of two levels of incremental capacity identified within the market demand assessment:

  • Level 1 — 6.98 million cubic meters/day for the gas years from 2030/2031 to 2044/2045;
    • Level 2 — 10.20 million cubic meters/day for the gas years from 2032/2033 to 2046/2047.

      Further implementation of the project will depend on the auction results and the passing of an economic test. If demand is confirmed, GTSOU and the Polish operator GAZ-SYSTEM will move to the practical phase — the development of the relevant infrastructure, the Ministry of Energy stated.

      The mentioned project received synchronous approval from the Polish regulator (URE). This, the Ministry of Energy pointed out, is an important signal of support from European partners and a prerequisite for the implementation of cross-border infrastructure solutions.

      Increasing capacity in the Polish direction reportedly:

      • expands Ukraine's access to gas from the European market;
        • reduces dependence on risky supply routes;
          • increases the flexibility and reliability of the energy system under wartime conditions.

            "The development of the interconnector also aligns with the long-term strategy for integrating the Ukrainian and European gas markets," the statement reads.
