According to U.S. Africa Command, the missing Americans were participating in African Lion 2026—an annual joint exercise designed to strengthen interoperability between U.S. forces, NATO allies, and African nations.

The command noted that their disappearance was reported on Saturday near the Cap Draa training area, located near the city of Tan-Tan in Morocco.

According to officials, a search and rescue operation is underway involving land, air, and sea assets from the U.S., Morocco, and other countries.

The incident remains under investigation, and search efforts are ongoing. Our focus is on the service members and their families

African Lion is the largest annual joint military exercise on the continent, conducted in Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia.

It covers operations in all domains, crisis response, and multinational coordination to enhance regional security and emergency preparedness.

The exercise, which involves 5,000 troops from over 40 countries and more than 30 American partner companies, will run from April 27 to May 8.
