In a memorandum dated August 10, the White House Office of Management and Budget repealed a 2023 directive that banned TikTok on government equipment over concerns about national security threats.
The decision was made following a conclusion by the U.S. Department of Justice that TikTok no longer meets the definition of a "covered application" under the legislation that restricted its use on federal platforms.
TikTok came under the control of American investors
In January, a deal was completed to transfer control of TikTok's U.S. business from China's ByteDance to a consortium of American companies that included Oracle and Silver Lake Management.
The U.S. Department of Justice said that the current version of TikTok operates independently of ByteDance, and that the controlling stake is owned by American investors. The company also revised its content recommendation algorithm and cybersecurity system.
The TikTok ban became the subject of a long-running dispute in the United States because of concerns about possible access by Chinese authorities to the data of American users. TikTok and Beijing denied these allegations.
Trump had previously spoken positively about TikTok and said that the app helped him during the 2024 presidential campaign.
