In a video from his private dinner, which was briefly posted on the White House YouTube channel before being removed, he questioned the value of NATO, claiming that the war with Iran showed him that the alliance "will not be there if we ever have a big war; you know what I mean by a big war."
Even more disturbingly for Europeans, he then continued, adding: "If we ever have the big one – hopefully we won’t, [our] relationship is very good with the big one, better than with Nato – but they won’t be there."
In another excerpt, he criticized "very bad" allies in NATO and called the alliance a "paper tiger," while expressing frustration that allies had not helped with Iran and stating that it was "the last thing I needed."
Separately, he also mocked French President Emmanuel Macron for a 2025 incident when he was apparently pushed by his wife, Brigitte.
Discussing his recent phone call with the French president, Trump said: ""I call up France, Macron – whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from the right to the jaw."
He then mocked Macron's English accent and claimed that the French president only wanted to help "after winning the war."
"It is worth remembering that these remarks were not intended for public discussion and were made at a private event, but they still tell us how Trump views NATO and his European allies," the publication notes.
Trump's mockery of Macron caused anger in France.
"Frankly, this is unacceptable," said Yaël Braun-Pivet, the speaker of the lower house of the French parliament.
"We are now discussing the future of the world. Now in Iran, this has consequences for the lives of millions of people, people are dying on the battlefield, and we have a president who laughs, who mocks others," she said.
Even Manuel Bompard, the coordinator of the far-left party "Unsubmissive France," rushed to Macron's defense, the publication notes.
"You know the extent of my disagreement with the president, but the way Donald Trump talks to him and talks about his wife – I find it absolutely unacceptable," Bompard told BFMTV.
Trump's jibes and mockery are "neither elegant nor appropriate," Macron also commented.
French President Emmanuel Macron himself, speaking to reporters during a trip to South Korea, dismissed Trump's jibes and mockery from last night, saying they were "neither elegant nor appropriate" and "do not deserve a response."
Instead, he pointed to the ongoing impact of the war, including rising energy prices, stating that "steps must be taken towards de-escalation, a ceasefire, and renewed negotiations, as this is the only way to truly resolve the situation in the region."
