Spain calls on EU to postpone ban on Russian gas due to risk of dependence on the US

The head of one of Europe's largest liquefied natural gas hubs has called on the European Union to postpone the planned 2027 ban on imports of Russian LNG, warning of the risk of excessive dependence on supplies from the United States. This is reported by UNN citing the Financial Times.

The head of the port of Bilbao, Ivan Jimenez, stated that the EU should gradually reduce purchases of Russian gas, but not abruptly abandon it.

It is impossible to do this overnight

– he emphasized.

According to Jimenez, now is not the best time for a complete rejection of Russian LNG, as this could create serious risks for the energy security of the European Union.

Spain insists on adhering to the phase-out schedule

At the same time, Spain's Energy Minister Sara Aagesen Muñoz stated that Europe should implement the ban in accordance with the approved schedule. According to her, the current increase in imports of Russian gas is temporary and is linked to the unstable situation on the global energy market.

We believe this is possible, and from January 1, Europe must completely abandon Russian gas

– the minister said.

According to the publication, in May almost 28% of gas supplies to Spain came from Russia, which is 58.5% more than a year earlier. At the same time, the EU ban provides for the cessation of imports of Russian LNG under new contracts from January 1, 2027, as well as a gradual phase-out of pipeline gas by September 2027.
