Screamed, beat, and left without water in the heat: a Kyiv resident may face three years in prison for killing a dog

In Kyiv, a man locked his dog on the balcony as punishment. The four-legged animal died from heatstroke, and law enforcement officials notified the owner of suspicion of cruelty to animals, reports UNN citing Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.

Details

A 37-year-old man living in the Holosiivskyi district of the capital locked his French bulldog named "Rafik" on the balcony. He explained that he wanted to punish the animal for disobedience.

The owner left the dog neither water nor food. This despite the fact that at that time the capital was hit by a wave of abnormal heat. After some time, the dog died from dehydration and heatstroke.

The already dead animal was seen by a girl who came to visit the man. She told her mother about the terrible discovery, and she called the police.

Note that the man was not aggressive towards his dog for the first time. Neighbors of the suspect said that he often left Rafik tied up on the street, yelled at him, and beat him.

Now the Kyiv resident faces up to three years in prison.

Reminder

In June 2026, a petition was registered on the Cabinet of Ministers website to strengthen criminal liability for killing animals. The document proposes imprisonment of up to 15 years for intentional killing of an animal.
