The Trump administration's decision to suspend the introduction of increased tariffs for 90 days is "the beginning of a return to economic reasons," said the Governor of the Bank of France, François Villeroy de Galhau. But he added that "two bad ingredients in the American salad" remain: unpredictability and protectionism.
Future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday that Trump's decision to suspend the tariff rally for most countries is evidence of the European Union's unity in defending the region's interests. Commenting on Trump's new decision in an interview with German broadcaster RTL, Merz said the announcement was "a response to the determination of Europeans."
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk paused the US in the tariff war, publishing a statement on social network X that Europeans and Americans should "make the most of" the three-month period to support and strengthen "close transatlantic relations."
The United Kingdom's Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said that Trump's pause on heating up import duties "strengthens the pragmatic" strategy of the British government. Answering the question of whether the latest US foreign policy decisions prevented her from relying on Washington as a trading partner, Cooper said that Britain adheres to a "steady course" in order to avoid "daily shock or getting into current comments and reactions."
